I admit that this oatmeal bowl is kind of pricey as my homemade meal ideas are usually around $5. For example, Banana Oat Pancakes Topped with Strawberries cost $4.81, Shakshuka (Poached Eggs in Spicy Tomato Sauce) with Toast was about $3.00, while Salmon Tofu Broccolli was $5.88. (You can also choose to use half a peach instead of one whole peach - that would lower this oatmeal bowl's cost to $5.33 then!)

This is all because of one premium imported ingredient in this oatmeal bowl - peaches. To be honest, this was my first time eating a peach. My friend and I walked past Little Farms market the other day, and I decided to buy and try one as recommended by her.

So, what is the deal with peaches? I had so many questions. After doing some quick research a.k.a. Googling, here is a TLDR/Peach 101 for those of you who are curious too.

  1. A peach is a variety of stone fruits, also known as drupes. Other stone fruits include plums, cherries, and mangoes.

  2. A stone fruit is called a stone fruit because its flesh surrounds a large, stone-like pit which contains the seed.

  3. Peaches have fuzzy skins, and yes, the skin is edible, although you would definitely want to wash it thoroughly beforehand as they may contain pesticides or dirt.

  4. The fuzzy skins help protect peaches from pests and prevent peaches from decaying by keeping moisture away.

  5. Nectarines are basically peaches without the fuzzy skins. They are "accidentally hairless" due to a recessive gene trait, causing them to have smooth skins instead, however, this also cause nectarines to rot more easily than peaches.

  6. Apart from nectarines, there are also white peaches, yellow peaches, flat/doughnut/donut peaches, and honey peaches.

  7. White peaches taste similar to yellow peaches but slightly sweeter due to their low acidity. Their flesh is generally a paler shade of yellow as compared to yellow peaches.

  8. The distinctive characteristic of flat/doughnut/donut peaches is their shapes - a flat saucer shape resembling a doughnut.

  9. Honey peaches have beautiful pinkish, milky white skin, and they are known for their rich sweetness.

  10. Peaches are considered auspicious in Chinese culture - they symbolise longevity and immortality.

  11. Peaches offer many health benefits, for example, they are rich in antioxidants that help protect your body against aging and disease.

I like having my main dish with a drink. Most of the time, it's a homemade latte. But for this meal, I've decided to try Osulloc Green Tea Latte Double Shot which was gifted by my cousin.

I recently learned that technically speaking, "green tea" is different from "matcha". Not knowing the differences actually caused me to buy green tea powder when I wanted matcha powder the other day from a Japanese supermarket... Anyway, the following is a handy comparison table I have created to summarise the information from the Art of Tea website.

Green Tea

Matcha

Cultivating process

Cultivated under the sun.

Shade-grown in the 3 weeks before it is harvested.

Colour

Dull green with a brownish tone.

Vibrant green colour (the shade increases chlorophyll levels in its leaves).

Harvesting process

Cut by a machine and sent directly to a processing plant, where it is steamed to stop fermentation. The leaves are then blown-dried by a whirling machine.

Hand-picked to select the best green tea leaves. After its stems and veins are removed, the leaves are stone-ground into matcha powder.

Taste and texture

Light and fresh with grassy or earthy tones, sometimes bitter.

Richer, sweeter flavour and a frothy texture.

Drink preparation

Steeped in hot water best at a mild water temparate of 180°-185° F for about 3 minutes.

Whisked into hot water using a matcha tea whisk until a small layer of foam appears.

Nutrition

Some nutritions are discarded because after steeping green tea leaves in hot water, the loose tea or tea bags are discarded.

More nutritions are retained as compared to green tea, because matcha is made with the entire leaf ground into powder.

Osulloc Green Tea Latte Double Shot

My verdict on Osulloc Green Tea Latte Double Shot? Tasty! But I added the mixture of the powder and hot water into 100ml of Meiji Fresh Milk, so I'm not sure how much the fresh milk contributed to enhancing its flavour. Regardless, it's a delicious drink that I would make again.

Anyway, this marks the end of my first post in 2023 then. Happy new year! :)
