Signature Pork Belly Rice 招牌八度卤肉饭 - $6.0
The braised pork gravy, crafted with premium Taiwanese soya sauce, was a burst of flavor. The braised pork pieces were super tender and melted in my mouth, as compared to the Fat Brother & Sister's Lu Rou Fan from Yew Tee Pasar Malam. Served with a whole hardboiled braised egg, pickled yellow radish, and scallions, this dish strikes a balance between tanginess and richness from the pork belly. Although I would've preferred an even more thicker texture and more generous serving, this Lu Rou Fan was sold at an affordable $6.0 with a portion just right for a satisfying meal.
Chicken Mee Sua 鸡肉面线 - $6.0
This was my first time trying another Taiwanese classic dish, Mee Sua. It resembles the Chinese Hokkien dish, Lor Mee, as both feature rich gravy and can be enhanced with a dash of vinegar. However, I found that I prefer Taiwanese Mee Sua due to its thinner wheat vermicelli noodles. Traditionally served with oysters, we were pleased to discover a chicken alternative as we don't enjoy oysters. Opting for chicken over oyster didn't compromise the flavor; the thick, rich gravy was a delight. Note: The dish is topped with dried shrimps, so be cautious if you have seafood allergies.
Grass Jelly Milk Tea (Iced) 仙草冻奶茶 - $6.90
You can select your preferred sugar level for their milk tea from three choices: 0%, 50% or 100%. Unfortunately, we seemed to have made the wrong decision to opt for 0% as the drink turned out to be very bland (it was definitely a healthier choice if you are watching your sugar intake). However, we liked the chewy grass jelly that added depth to the otherwise bland drink, and appreciated that they gave a generous amount of grass jelly.
Jasmine Green Tea with Pearls (Iced) 茉莉珍珠绿茶 - $5.10
Perfectly refreshing, the iced green tea complemented the dishes rich in gravy like the Braised Pork Belly Rice and Chicken Mee Sua above. Although I am not a fan of pearls in green tea, I found that the bite-sized, chewy boba added an interesting twist. Note: You might want to request it without pearls if, like me, you prefer them in sweetened milk tea instead of pure green tea.
I have patronised 8 Degrees Taiwanese Bistro before, and they never fail to deliver delicious Taiwanese food every time. Although not part of today's order, their Brinjal with Pork Floss 肉鬆茄子 ($7.20) left a lasting impression on me with its delicious flavors, and I would highly recommend that side dish.
